New Study Proves that Infidelity is the #1 Reason for Divorce

While it may seem obvious that this would cause divorce, scientists have always stood by the argument that infidelity is the result of a bad marriage, not the cause of a split.

Therefore, they determined that extramarital sex actually has little impact on divorce. Clinicians who work with couples where there has been infidelity report that they have had some cases where an affair actually helped the couple to restore their marriage. Yet recently two scientists analyzed data from 16,090 individuals and gave researchers something to think about.

Using data from the General Social Survey, the scientists looked at the marital histories of people who have had an affair and those who have not. When they looked at the numbers, they realized that one-fifth of all once-married people had an affair while they were legally wed.

14 percent of women engaged in an affair, while 23 percent of men were unfaithful to their spouse. After interviewing couples that were married, separated, divorces, or remarried, the scientists determined that over one-half of all people that were engaged in an extramarital affair would eventually divorce their spouses.
