New Bill Will Impact Child Support and Alimony
A new bill approved in the Florida State Senate this year made significant changes to the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA).
The bill allows the state to pursue child support orders from divorced parents that no longer live in state or even in the country. In addition to child support orders, the bill was altered to include alimony orders as well.
Following in the footsteps of other state legislature, Florida has decided to crack down on alimony laws and now favors durational alimony over permanent alimony. The primary difference between the two is the length of time that one spouse is responsible for making payments to the other. Durational alimony will only last for a certain period of time, often dependent on the length of the marriage; generally speaking, it is limited to marriages under ten years. Lifetime alimony will only be granted if one spouse can prove that payments will not prove to be a total financial burden to the other party.
