Lawyers Shocked by Long-Term Alimony Award
A woman who is in good health and has a steady job has just been awarded lump-sum and long-term alimony, which is causing quite a stir in the legal world.
In general, courts across the country are loathe to award long-term alimony payments, especially if the spouse is in good health and is able to support him/herself. However, this recent case heard by a Supreme Court has many family law attorneys baffled. By approving the demands of the ex-wife, the court has reversed years of cases that have fought to do just that.
Although the spouses were divorced in 2009, it has taken several years for their alimony case to be heard by the state supreme court. Even though the wife has earned $73,500 in one year, the judge decided to award the generous lump sum and long-term alimony requests due to her husband's marital infidelities. The lump sum was granted to pay off her attorney fees, while she will continue to receive $1,250 per month in alimony.
