Increased Domestic Violence Homicides Reported in Orlando
Recent statistics show a shocking increase in domestic violence homicides in the Orlando, Florida area.
According to the mayor, homicides connected to domestic violence have increased two-fold for 2011 when compared to all the listed domestic abuse homicides for the previous year. After learning about this serious problem in his area, the mayor revealed a new program that he hopes will bring these figures down dramatically. Working with a non-profit, a program was designed to educate domestic violence victims and provide outreach programs for the community.
A similar program was launched in 2010 where volunteers worked to educate one specific neighborhood about domestic violence. A year later, the organization involved in the program has seen a decrease in domestic violence cases. Following the success of last year's initiative, the mayor hopes that the program will work as well in different areas of the city this year.
