Father Attempts to Have Child Support for Disabled Son Reduced
A wealthy man in Minnesota fought unsuccessfully to lower his child support payments for the care of his disabled son.
Timothy Hanratty had hoped that the Minnesota Court of Appeals would side with him regarding his son, 32-year-old Travis Hanratty. He was previously making payments of $2,300 in child support, mostly to pay for the group home where his son lives. Hanratty had gone to the Hennepin County Court system where Judge Kevin Burke ordered him to continue making the payments.
The judge told Hanratty that since he made more than $1 million per year in both 2007 and 2008 there was no reason to stop the payments. Yet Hanratty disagreed, saying that since his son is eligible for state support, there is no reason why he should continue to make the child support payments. In total his son's group home bill is $6,500 since he requires extensive care, making him eligible for continued child support payments despite his age.
The defendant claims that he wants the best for his son but was dismayed when his appeal was turned down completely by the state Supreme Court.
