Young Children of Divorce May Experience Learning and Social Difficulties
According to a new study released by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, young children of divorce are more likely to experience serious learning and social difficulties after divorce.
Contrary to popular belief, Hyun Sik Kim, an author of the study, found that "children of divorce do not experience detrimental setbacks in the pre-divorce period," but instead directly after the divorce has been finalized. From that point on, the children in the study showed a serious decline in interpersonal skills and math test scores.
Additional problems highlighted in the study included loneliness, anxiety, low self-esteem, sadness, all of which are symptomatic of internalizing problems and emotions. Although the study did provide some positive news, that these children did not necessarily show a worsening of their emotional state years later, "there is no sign that children of divorce catch up with their counterparts, either."
