Billboards Advertise Alimony Message
While motorists in Polk County are familiar with seeing billboards for the state lottery lining roadways, a new sign has captured public interest.
Last year one concerned citizen, Steve Hoye, put up a massive sign on his property that bears the message: "STOP PERMANENT ALIMONY." Now anyone who drives past his property off of U.S. 27 is left to wonder just who erected the sign and why. The sign also contains information on how to reach Florida Alimony Reform Inc., a group that would like to see serious changes made to existing alimony laws in Florida.
Since his divorce was finalized in 2007, Hoye claims that he has gone bankruptcy from making his monthly $960 alimony payments. The disgruntled 57 year old says that "the Florida court system has its hooks in me for the rest of my life, as long as my (ex)wife is alive." In Florida, alimony is granted to one person during a divorce and is assigned based on two factors: one person's need and the other person's ability to pay.
