Man Gets Months of Probation for Domestic Abuse
After pleading guilty to a charge of assault for domestic violence, James Willis was sentenced to six months of deferred probation.
According to the court records, the former Texas Tech defensive coordinator held himself responsible for the actions of December 22, 2010. On that date officers with the Wolfforth Police Department responded to a call placed by wife Shalane Willis, stating that her husband had struck her in the face and threw her on the bed violently. When she was able to escape his hold, Shalane ran next door to a neighbor's home to call 911.
Willis was dismissed from his position as defensive coordinator on Christmas Day last year, just days before his team would go on to defeat Northwestern in the annual TicketCity Bowl. However, the team released a press release stating that his assault arrest was not a factor in his dismissal. It turns out that Willis had been in talks with joining the staff of a different team in Florida.
