New Bill Targets Domestic Violence on Indian Reservations
Over the years Indian reservations have come to be known for many things, among them a high rate of domestic violence backed by statistics. While both local and national authorities have tried to intervene on behalf of the victims, they have been stopped by federal laws.
However, two new court rulings could make arrests easier if they are pushed through. If these rulings are approved at the national level, prosecutors across the country would have a greater ability to charge and punish domestic violence offenders.
By granting federal prosecutors access to those who commit domestic violence crimes on reservations, women and children that might become victims or suffer further abuse could be protected. As it stands now, victims on reservations are unable to use local, state or national laws to report those who harm them if the abuse occurred on a reservation.
