People Are Waiting Longer to Marry
While the Census Bureau conducts research on a variety of topics, a recent and new study showed that people are waiting longer to marry for the first time.
Overall, women marrying in their teens have dropped dramatically since 1970, while more and more men are deciding to wait to marry until after they have completed college. In total, 19.1 marriages were conducted per 1,000 men and 17.6 per 1,000 women. Divorce rates are nearly half of these figures, at 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women (out of 1,000).
After analyzing regional data, researchers jokingly stated that singles who are looking to marry soon should head to the West and South. These areas show slightly higher rates of marriage; however, they also show higher rates of divorce as well. Three states that rank high for marriages – Arkansas, Utah and Nevada – also showed high divorce rates. Contrary to popular beliefs, New York and New Jersey were actually amongst the states with the lowest divorce rates.
