Divorce Rate in the U.S. has Decreased
According to new statistics, the divorce rate for Americans is at its lowest since the 1970s. This means that fewer couples in the United States are choosing to divorce.
In 2009, the divorce rate per 1,000 married women dropped to 16.4 and in 2008 the divorce rate was 16.9 for every 1,000 women. Back in 1980, the divorce rate was much higher with a rate of 22.6 per every 1,000 women in the county.
Some experts say the downward trend in the divorce rate may be the after effect of a slowing economy and high unemployment. With the real estate market stagnating and so many people being out of jobs, couples may find it hard to pay legal fees and choose to stay in their marriages instead of filing for divorce.
